  • Militants were reportedly heavily armed

ISLAMABAD: Iranian authorities say security forces killed six “terrorists” allegedly linked to Israel in a raid near the Pakistan border, amid ongoing tensions in the restive Sistan-Baluchistan province, according to Al Arabiya English.

“During an intense exchange of fire with terrorists in Sistan-Baluchistan province, six assailants were killed and two others arrested,” official news agency IRNA said, citing a statement from the intelligence services.

The report did not provide an exact location or say when the raid took place.

IRNA said there were “documents” indicating “the Zionist nature” of the group targeted in the latest raid, adding that its members had planned to attack a “vital” facility in Iran’s east, without elaborating.

Armed with “US-made” weapons

The report said that “the main operation team” was composed of “seven non-Iranian terrorists,” but did not specify their nationality.
Two intelligence agents and a police officer were wounded in the gunfight, IRNA said.

According to Iranian state-run Press TV, the main operational team comprised seven non-Iranian militants armed with various weapons, including laser-guided RPG-7 launchers, US-made M4 and M16 assault rifles, hand grenades, grenade launchers, explosive vests, handheld radios, and a large cache of RPG anti-personnel rounds. Several vehicles and motorcycles were also seized.

Iran regularly reports deadly ambushes in the province targeting police or members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Pakistan-Iran border

Pakistan and Iran engage and cooperate with each other on the issues of incidents of violence and terrorist activities along their shared border for ensuring peace and stability in the region.

Last month, Pakistan decided to bar its citizens from travelling by road to Iran and Iraq for the Arbaeen pilgrimage this year over security and safety concerns.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced that pilgrims will now only be permitted to travel to the holy sites in Iran and Iraq by air.

Naqvi said in a post on X: “After extensive consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, [the] Balochistan Government, and security agencies, it has been decided that Zaireen (pilgrims) will not be allowed to travel to Iraq and Iran by road for Arbaeen this year.”

“This difficult decision has been made in the interest of public safety and national security,” Naqvi added.
