ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan government on Friday announced a nationwide reduction in electricity tariffs by PKR 1.55 per unit, offering significant financial relief to consumers across the country.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has decreased the electricity rates under the third quarterly adjustment of the current fiscal year.

According to NEPRA’s official notification, the revised electricity prices will apply for the months of May to July. The decision is expected to provide major financial relief to power consumers nationwide.

The reduction in electricity prices is expected to provide a total relief of PKR 52.6 billion to consumers. Both residential and commercial users will see a significant drop in their electricity bills during this period.

According to NEPRA, the price adjustment is the result of improved efficiency and enhanced management within the power sector. It also supports the government’s wider efforts to reduce inflation and offer economic relief to the public.

The revised rates will be automatically applied to electricity bills over the coming months, bringing much-needed relief to households and businesses.

Earlier, in April 2025, NEPRA officially approved a PKR 1.71 per unit electricity price reduction across Pakistan from April to June 2025.

The decision to reduce electricity prices follows a formal request from the federal government, aimed at easing the financial strain on consumers amid rising inflation. The price cut will be applied to electricity bills over a three-month period, offering relief to millions of households and businesses. However, lifeline consumers will not be eligible for this benefit.

The request was initially submitted to NEPRA, which held a public hearing on April 4, 2025, before approving the reduction.

In a separate development, Pakistan has launched a new independent electricity market system. NEPRA has officially granted a license to the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO), which will now assume the responsibilities previously handled by the Central Power Purchasing Agency.
