World Test Championship Table Gets a Major Shake-Up as Bangladesh Stun Pakistan in First Test

ISLAMABAD: The 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings have witnessed a significant shift following Bangladesh’s 104-run victory over Pakistan in the first Test in Mirpur, their first-ever home win against the opposition.

Bangladesh have jumped to sixth place (one win, one loss, one draw – 16 points, 44.44% PCT), while Pakistan have sunk to seventh (one win, two losses – 12 points, 33.33% PCT), a dramatic fall from their earlier fifth-place spot above India.

Australia continue to rule the WTC roost, sitting comfortably at the top. With seven wins and just one loss from eight matches, they have amassed 84 points and boast an impressive win percentage of 87.50.

New Zealand hold firm in second place. The Kiwis remain unbeaten in the true sense, with two wins and one draw from three games, collecting 28 points at a solid 77.78 win percentage.

Defending champions South Africa occupy third spot. The Proteas have secured three wins and one defeat from four matches, gathering 36 points with a strong win percentage of 75.00.

Sri Lanka round out the top four in fourth position. They have played just two matches so far, winning one and drawing the other, earning 16 points with a win percentage of 66.67.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the second and final Test starting May 16 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced an unchanged 15-member squad. Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as captain, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz as vice-captain.

The squad retains two uncapped players, white-ball batter Tanzid Hasan and middle-order prospect Amite Hasan, who boasts a first-class average of 49.

Match Context

Bangladesh enter the Sylhet Test leading the two-match series 1-0 after a dramatic finish in Mirpur. Chasing 268 for victory, Pakistan were well-placed at tea on the final day but lost seven wickets in the final session to be bowled out for 163.


Earlier, Bangladesh posted 413 in their first innings, powered by Najmul Hossain Shanto’s record hundred, Mominul Haque’s 91, and Mushfiqur Rahim’s 71.

Pakistan debutant Azan Awais struck a century in reply, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s five-wicket haul triggered a collapse from 349-6 to 386 all out. Mominul and Shanto then added second-innings half-centuries before Nahid Rana’s five-for sealed the historic victory.
