WASHINGTON: US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has strongly criticised Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, accusing the country of committing grave violations and urging the United States to end military assistance to its long-standing Middle Eastern ally.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Omar said Israel had repeatedly acted without facing meaningful consequences from the international community. She argued that continued political and military support had enabled Israeli authorities to pursue military campaigns with what she described as a high degree of impunity.

“The lesson Israel has learned, time and again, is that it can commit genocide and other atrocities with near-total impunity,” Omar wrote in her post, expressing concern over the expanding regional impact of the conflict.

The congresswoman further alleged that Israel was applying in Lebanon the same military approach it had used in Gaza, claiming that the ongoing violence had inflicted severe humanitarian consequences on civilians.

“Israel is now exporting the Gaza playbook to Lebanon,” she said, arguing that the conflict had resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement across the country.

Omar stated that thousands of people had been killed during the hostilities, while more than one million residents had been forced to flee their homes as fighting intensified in several areas.

The Democratic lawmaker concluded her remarks with a direct appeal for a change in US policy towards Israel, calling for an immediate end to American military support. “NO MORE US AID TO ISRAEL,” she wrote.

Her comments come amid continuing international debate over the humanitarian impact of the conflict and growing calls from some lawmakers and rights advocates for greater scrutiny of US military assistance to Israel.

The issue remains deeply divisive within American politics, with supporters of Israel arguing that US aid is essential for the country’s security, while critics contend that Washington should reassess its support in light of civilian casualties and humanitarian concerns arising from regional conflicts.
