SAN FRANCISCO: Anthropic said it had received authorisation from the United States government to allow a small group of American cybersecurity firms to access its powerful Mythos 5 artificial intelligence model.
Access to Mythos 5 had earlier been blocked by United States authorities over national security concerns linked to possible misuse of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
Restricted access approved
An Anthropic spokesperson said the company would continue talks with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make its Fable 5 model available again to the general public.
On June 12, the government forced Anthropic to cut off access to its two advanced artificial intelligence models after identifying vulnerabilities in safety measures designed to prevent misuse.
The move drew criticism from some technology observers, who described it as government overreach.
Tensions with White House
Anthropic has had strained relations with President Donald Trump’s administration. The company earlier refused to allow its technology to be used for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, prompting the Pentagon to cancel contracts with the firm.
The development came as rival OpenAI launched its new GPT-5.6 model with restricted, client-by-client government validation.
Trump recently signed an executive order creating a voluntary federal review of national security risks in advanced artificial intelligence models before release.
