ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted a Pakistan-Denmark-sponsored resolution aimed at strengthening accountability for attacks against UN peacekeepers.

The resolution was co-sponsored by a record 153 Member States, reflecting the strong support of the wider UN membership for United Nations peacekeeping and for the protection of men and women serving under the UN flag, according to a statement issued by the Foreign Office.

Presenting the resolution to the Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, underscored the increasing frequency of attacks on peacekeepers and noted that accountability for such crimes often remains inadequate.

The resolution reaffirms that attacks against UN peacekeepers are unacceptable, may constitute war crimes under international law, and must be met with credible investigation, prosecution and accountability.

The adoption of this resolution marks an important step in strengthening the existing accountability framework for crimes against peacekeepers, including through the designation of a senior focal point within the UN Secretariat.

Pakistan has long been among the largest and most consistent contributors of troops to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

The adoption of this resolution underscores the country’s enduring leadership and steadfast commitment to UN peacekeeping, reflected not only in its significant personnel contributions to peace missions worldwide but also in its active diplomatic engagement and constructive role in shaping policy discussions aimed at enhancing the safety, effectiveness, and credibility of UN peace operations.
