SYDNEY: Australia has named Lieutenant General Susan Coyle as its new Chief of Army, making her the first woman to head the force in its 125-year history, Defence Minister Richard Marles announced on Monday.

Coyle, who has served for more than three decades, has held roles in the Solomon Islands, Afghanistan and the Middle East during her military career.

Marles described the appointment as a “deeply historic” moment, noting that she is the first woman to command any branch of Australia’s armed services.

The announcement comes as the Australian Army undergoes a significant transformation, focusing on enhancing its capabilities with long-range weaponry, drones and advanced technologies.

Coyle highlighted her broad operational experience, including work in cyber warfare, saying it has prepared her for the responsibilities of leadership. She added that her background provides a strong foundation to meet the expectations and trust placed in her as she takes on the role.
