RIYADH: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi on Monday strongly condemned the Iranian attack on the United Arab Emirates oil tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, which resulted in the death of one crew member and left several others injured.
He described the attack as a terrorist act and said it constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and a serious breach of the principles safeguarding freedom of maritime navigation.
“It also constitutes a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817, which stresses the need to protect international navigation and refrain from targeting commercial vessels or endangering maritime routes,” he stated in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Moreover, Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC full solidarity with the UAE, supporting all measures it takes to protect its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its installations and vital interests.
Albudaiwi urged the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to fulfill its legal and moral responsibilities by taking a firm and decisive stance against what he described as Iran’s repeated attacks. He called for immediate action to halt such incidents, hold those responsible accountable, protect freedom of international navigation, and preserve regional security, stability, and the global economy.

He also extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the crew member who lost his life and wished the injured a swift recovery.

The ministry condemned the strike as a serious violation of international law that threatens regional security and stability. It said the UAE reserves the right to respond to the escalation and to take all necessary measures to protect its territory, citizens and residents, safeguard its sovereignty, security and stability, and defend its national interests.
The ministry added that the armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to address any threats. It said all necessary measures are being taken to counter attempts to undermine the country’s security and stability. The public was also urged to rely on official sources for updates and to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.
