The report comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where commercial shipping has faced increasing security threats in recent weeks.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a strategically vital waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies is transported.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, while further details regarding the attack and those responsible have yet to be confirmed.
Earlier on Monday, one Indian crew member was killed and eight others were wounded when two Emirati oil tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday, in the latest escalation in the strategic waterway.
