NEW YORK: Robbie Robertson, guitarist and songwriter affiliated with the popular US-Canadian rock group ‘The Band’, died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness, according to a statement posted on social media by his family. He was 80.

“Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death, including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife, Dominique, her partner Nicholas, and his children Alexandra, Sebastian, Delphine, and Delphine’s partner Kenny,” the statement said.
Born as Jaime Royal Robertson on July 5, 1943, in Toronto, Canada, was one of the last two surviving members of The Band, the rock band formed in 60s.

Robertson played as lead guitarist of ‘the Band’ and also wrote some of its best songs.
He became a top star after the release of a documentary about the group titled “The Last Waltz,” in 1978.
Robertson later produced many songs for movies like “The Departed,” “Raging Bull,” “The Irishman” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
