WASHINGTON: A dangerous heatwave disrupted Fourth of July celebrations across large parts of the central and eastern United States, forcing officials to cancel or postpone parades, concerts and fireworks displays as temperatures soared and power grids came under pressure.

More than 185 million people, over half the United States population, were under heat alerts on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters warned that heat index values could reach as high as 115F in some areas, making outdoor events potentially dangerous.

In Washington, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, a major event linked to President Donald Trump’s efforts to mark the country’s 250th anniversary, was temporarily closed after temperatures reached 101F. The National Park Service later cancelled the Independence Day Parade over safety concerns.

The extreme conditions were caused by a high-pressure “heat dome”, which traps hot air over a region and pushes humidity higher.

The heat also strained electricity networks as air-conditioning demand surged. PJM, the largest United States power grid operator, ordered emergency conservation measures, while Con Edison reported around 17,000 customers without power in New York.

Several cities reported major disruptions. Philadelphia cancelled its Salute to Independence Parade after temperatures tied a record high of 103F. Haddon Township in New Jersey cancelled its parade, Watertown in New York called off fireworks, and Boston delayed entry to its riverside celebration.
