ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the people of Venezuela after powerful earthquakes struck the country, leaving at least 32 people dead and hundreds injured, while rescue operations continued amid widespread destruction.

According to initial reports, two strong earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the magnitude scale hit Venezuela on Wednesday, triggering building collapses, infrastructure damage, and panic in several regions, including the capital Caracas. Authorities have warned that casualty figures may rise as search and rescue efforts progress.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conveyed condolences to the Venezuelan government and people, particularly the families who lost loved ones in the disaster. In a message shared on social media platform X, he expressed grief over the loss of lives and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.

“On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the bereaved families. We pray for the injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected in this difficult time,” the prime minister stated.

President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed profound sorrow over the devastation caused by the earthquakes. In an official statement issued by the President House media wing, he offered sympathies to the victims’ families and reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Venezuela.

He said the people of Pakistan shared the grief of the Venezuelan nation and prayed for strength, resilience, and speedy recovery for those affected. The president also expressed hope that Venezuela would overcome the tragedy with courage as relief and rescue operations continue.

Rescue teams in Caracas and surrounding areas are working to locate survivors trapped under debris, with dozens of buildings reported to have collapsed. Authorities have mobilised emergency response units as aftershocks continue to affect already damaged regions.

Interim President Delcy Rodríguez stated that initial casualty figures did not yet include the hardest-hit La Guaira state, warning that the toll could rise further as assessments continue. The United States Geological Survey (USGS), using predictive modelling, has suggested that the death toll could potentially reach into the thousands, with a significant probability of exceeding 10,000, depending on the final scale of damage and rescue outcomes.

Officials have described the situation as critical, with emergency teams working round the clock in difficult conditions to save as many lives as possible.
