HARARE, Zimbabwe: Opener Aaron George hammered a magnificent century to guide India to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup.

Chasing a challenging 311-run target, India romped home with 53 balls to spare at the Harare Sports Club on Wednesday, securing a finals berth against England this Friday.

Afghanistan set daunting target

Electing to bat first, Afghanistan posted a formidable 310 for four, built on the back of twin centuries.

Faisal Shinozada led the charge with a belligerent 110 from just 93 balls, while Uzairullah Niazai provided the finishing flourish with an unbeaten 101 off 86 deliveries.

The pair added 148 runs for the third wicket after openers Osman Sadat (39) and Khalid Ahmadzai (31) laid a solid foundation.

Indian bowlers Deepesh Devendran and Kanishk Chohan managed two wickets apiece.

India’s top order delivers flawless chase

In response, India’s chase was ignited by a breathtaking assault from Vaibhav Sooriyavanshi, who blazed 68 runs off a mere 33 balls.

The platform set, George took center stage, anchoring the innings with a masterful 115 off 104 balls, his knock punctuated by 15 fours and two sixes.

Captain Ayush Mhatre contributed a vital 62, ensuring no stutters in the pursuit.

The partnership between George and Mhatre effectively neutralized the Afghan attack, guiding India past the line with ease.

Afghanistan’s bowling effort overpowered

Despite the high total, Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled for control.

Nooristani Omarzai emerged as the most successful, claiming two wickets for 64 runs in his allotted overs, while Wahidullah Zadran chipped in with a solitary wicket.

The rest of the attack, however, was unable to contain the relentless Indian batting lineup on a true batting surface.

Final showdown against England awaits

With this emphatic win, the former champions have stormed into the tournament final, where they will face a confident England side.

The title clash is scheduled for Friday at the same venue, setting the stage for a high-stakes encounter to crown the new youth world champions.
