ANKARA, Turkiye: Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir has met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, the Turkish Presidency said.

The Turkish Presidency’s post on social media platform X on Tuesday, which also had a picture of the two, said President Erdogan received Field Marshal Munir at the Ankara airport.

“President Erdogan received Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces of Pakistan, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, at Ankara Airport,” the Turkish Presidency said.

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz, Chief of Turkish General Staff General Selcuk Bayraktaroglu and National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kalin also attended the meeting.

Separately, an X post by the Turkish embassy in Pakistan said Field Marshal Munir was accorded a guard of honour by a tri-services contingent of the Turkish armed forces following his arrival in Ankara.

General Bayraktaroglu welcomed Field Marshal Munir during his official visit, the Turkish embassy in Pakistan said.

“Rooted in brotherhood, mutual trust and a shared strategic vision, the enduring defence and military cooperation between Turkiye and Pakistan continues to grow stronger,” the embassy’s post said.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir arrived in Turkiye on Monday on a two-day official visit to hold meetings with the country’s military and political leadership.

The visit comes a month after Commander of the Turkish Land Forces General Metin Tokel visited Pakistan and held talks with Field Marshal Munir at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

According to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the two leaders discussed the regional security environment and explored avenues to further strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.

The ISPR said General Tokel reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing defence collaboration and institutional linkages between the armed forces of the two countries.

During the same visit, General Tokel also met Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.

Field Marshal Munir’s visit follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s trip to Turkiye earlier this month, which focused on expanding economic and trade cooperation between the two longstanding allies.

Pakistan and Turkiye maintain close strategic, political and defence ties, with both countries regularly conducting high-level exchanges and collaborating on defence production, military training and regional security issues.

The visit also follows Field Marshal Munir’s visit to Tehran in May as part of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to permanently end the conflict between the United States and Iran through dialogue and diplomacy.

During that visit, Field Marshal Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni.
