MONTREAL, Canada: Pop superstar Katy Perry and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have sparked dating speculation after being seen together on multiple occasions in recent weeks.
Sources, cited by US media, say the two have developed a connection, though the relationship is still in its early stages.
According to Us Weekly, Perry and Trudeau were spotted spending time together earlier this week in Montreal, with some insiders describing the outing as “definitely a date.”
However, others cautioned not to read too much into it. “It was casual,” a source told the magazine, adding that the pair had been in touch for the past month and share mutual acquaintances in the music industry.
The Dark Horse singer, currently on her global Lifetimes Tour, reportedly made time to meet Trudeau despite her packed schedule.
“Katy doesn’t have a lot of extra time right now,” a source explained, “but she agreed to see Justin.” The meeting follows Perry’s recent split from long-time fiancé Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares a four-year-old daughter, Daisy.
The couple’s joint statement on 3 July, published by People, confirmed they had parted ways after six years of engagement.
“Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship to focus on co-parenting,” the statement read. “They will continue to be seen together as a family.”
Trudeau and his ex-wife, Sophie Grégoire, separated in 2023 after 18 years of marriage.
In a statement at the time, Trudeau said the decision came after “many meaningful and difficult conversations.” He added, “We remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other.”
Dating rumours between Perry and Trudeau intensified after the two spent a full day together in Montreal on 28 July.
According to TMZ, they were seen walking through Mount Royal Park, dining at Le Violon, and later enjoying drinks at Taverne Atlantic.
Footage captured the pair chatting warmly, although no public displays of affection were noted.
Danny Smiles, co-owner and executive chef of Le Violon, told TMZ he served the two during their meal and didn’t sense romantic vibes.
“They were just two friends enjoying a meal,” he said, describing them as “perfect guests—super chill, extremely nice to the staff.”
Trudeau reportedly picked up the tab for the multi-course dinner, which included lobster, tuna, lamb gnocchi, and beef tartare.
Just two days later, Trudeau was seen in the audience at Perry’s Lifetimes Tour concert in Montreal, where he attended with his daughter, Ella-Grace.
Fans captured footage of the former prime minister singing along to Perry’s hit song “Firework.”
Speaking to People, a source said, “They are interested in each other, but it will take a while to see where this goes.”
The source added that both Perry and Trudeau have demanding lives and shared parenting responsibilities that could slow down the pace of any potential relationship.
“They each have an ex, so duties are split in half. And long-distance relationships, while still hard, are possible for these two.”
Another insider noted that the pair share common ideals. “Music is one of many things they can share. Both are idealists and still believe in trying to make the world a better place, even if that has become more difficult.”
A second source told People that Trudeau, familiar with maintaining privacy due to his political background, is unlikely to make any overt public moves at this stage.
“He knows they were being watched and is smart enough to play it low-key for now,” the source said.
