TEXAS, United States: Tesla has unveiled its next-generation Roadster electric sports car, demonstrating its ability to briefly fly and accelerate from zero to 60 mph (96.6 km/h) in just 0.81 seconds.

The long-awaited vehicle was presented on Thursday at SpaceX’s rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas, nearly nine years after its initial announcement.

During the demonstration, the Roadster drove upside down along a curved ramp before performing aerial manoeuvres using built-in thrusters developed in collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Roadster Performance and Flying Technology

The electric sports car uses compressed-air thrusters designed to improve acceleration, manoeuvrability and limited airborne movement.

Tesla demonstrated the vehicle lifting off the ground and passing over other vehicles, highlighting technology that extends beyond conventional electric car performance.

The company indicated that the Roadster could exceed 370 km/h, while its projected driving range surpasses 480 kilometres.

However, these figures remain manufacturer claims, and independent testing of the production vehicle has not yet been completed.

Production Expected in 2028

Tesla plans to begin Roadster production in 2028 following years of development delays.

The vehicle is expected to be offered in Performance, Thrust and Rocket configurations, with advanced propulsion capabilities varying between versions.

Questions remain over whether its airborne functions will receive regulatory approval for public roads.

The Roadster was originally introduced in 2017, when Tesla promised exceptional acceleration and long-distance driving capabilities.

Its latest unveiling comes as the company expands its focus on autonomous driving, artificial intelligence and robotics.

Although commercial availability remains two years away, the demonstration offers an early indication of Tesla’s ambitions for high-performance electric vehicles.
