ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has announced plans to launch a ferry service and increase the number of flights to facilitate pilgrims travelling to Iran and Iraq.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Special Task Force on Pilgrims’ Issues, chaired by the Interior Minister and Task Force Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Interior Minister Naqvi stressed that ensuring the safety and convenience of pilgrims is a top priority for the government. “We are committed to protecting our pilgrims from all kinds of troubles, whether it be logistical hurdles or illegal exploitation,” he said.
The meeting decided to introduce a new Group Organiser System effective January 1, 2026, replacing the traditional Salar system. Under the new framework, pilgrims will only be permitted to travel through registered group organisers, aiming to improve coordination, ensure accountability, and enhance security during religious travel.
Civil Aviation authorities informed the Special Task Force that 107 special flights will be operated to Iraq for the upcoming Arbaeen pilgrimage. Additionally, the number of weekly flights to Iran has been increased from 6 to 15, with further expansions currently under review.
To date, 1,413 applications have been received for the registration of group organisers. A comprehensive verification and screening process is currently underway to ensure compliance with the new system.
It was also decided that land route travel for Arbaeen will be reviewed after Ashura (10th Muharram). A final decision will be based on the updated regional security situation.
The meeting was also attended by Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.
