Deal Worth $35 Billion Boosts Anthropic’s AI Computing Power

Six-year agreement expands Anthropic’s computing capacity as competition with OpenAI drives unprecedented demand for AI infrastructure

SAN FRANCISCO: Anthropic has signed a $35 billion computing deal with Nvidia-backed cloud startup Lambda, further expanding its access to the enormous computing capacity required to develop advanced artificial intelligence models.

The San Francisco-based AI company agreed to a six-year deal with Lambda.

Lambda, based in San Jose, California, specialises in providing cloud computing infrastructure designed for AI workloads.

Anthropic Expands AI Computing Capacity

Under the arrangement, Lambda will gain access to a data centre being developed by Hut 8, a bitcoin miner and data-centre operator.

The facility in Texas will provide computing capacity for Anthropic, according to media reports.

Nvidia, which has invested in both Anthropic and Lambda, will lease the data centre from Hut 8, while Lambda will pay Nvidia for access to the facility, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The agreement follows another major six-year computing contract signed by Anthropic with London-based cloud provider Nscale.

That deal, worth about $45 billion, will provide Anthropic with computing capacity at a facility in West Virginia.

Computing Deals Reach $135 Billion

Anthropic has signed computing agreements worth at least $135 billion this year alone, highlighting the enormous infrastructure requirements of leading AI developers.

The company is competing aggressively with OpenAI for customers, revenue and computing resources as both AI developers move towards potential initial public offerings.

Demand for advanced chips, memory and data-centre capacity has surged as technology companies race to build increasingly powerful AI models.

The boom is also putting pressure on global semiconductor supply chains, affecting industries beyond artificial intelligence.

Rising memory and chip costs have already contributed to higher prices for some consumer electronics, including certain Apple Macs and iPads, while further price increases are expected across the technology sector.
