ISLAMABAD: Islamabad United have released an official statement clarifying the unexpected departure of star batter Alex Hales from the remainder of their Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 campaign.
The franchise confirmed that the English opener will not be available for Qualifier 2 or a potential final due to prior personal commitments.
In their announcement, United explained that a change in the PSL schedule meant Hales’ availability was only assured until 18 May.
The 36-year-old is now heading to Spain to attend a close friend’s wedding – a pre-arranged commitment that had been mutually agreed upon when his short-term deal was signed.
“Alex Hales has always been, and will continue to be, a cherished part of the Islamabad United family,” the club stated.
Hales also expressed his feelings, describing Islamabad United as more than just a team.
Support from Spain
“It always feels like a family playing for United,” he remarked. “It was brilliant to return this season, and I wish the lads all the best for the playoffs. I’ll be supporting them from Spain.”
Despite featuring in just two matches this season, Hales made quite an impression. His return innings against Karachi Kings on 19 May was nothing short of spectacular.
He blasted 88 runs off just 35 balls, including six fours and eight massive sixes, finishing with an extraordinary strike rate of 251.42. His knock helped Islamabad post a colossal total of 251 for 5, among the highest in PSL history.
However, the celebrations were short-lived. In the Qualifier 1 clash against Quetta Gladiators, Hales was dismissed for a second-ball duck, and United fell short in their 210-run chase, being bowled out for 179.
As a result, the reigning champions missed out on a direct route to the final and will now face the winner of the Eliminator between Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars in Qualifier 2, set to take place on 23 May at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
