KARACHI: One of the world’s largest container ships has arrived at Karachi Port, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan’s maritime sector as the country continues efforts to modernise its ports and enhance its position on regional and global trade routes.
The MSC ERICA, measuring 398.5 metres in length and 59 metres in width, berthed at the South Asia Pakistan Terminals (SAPTL) on Sunday. With a gross tonnage of 194,308 metric tons and a draft of 12 metres, the vessel ranks among the largest container ships currently operating worldwide.
More than 3,000 containers are expected to be handled during its stay before the ship departs for Dalian, China.
Karachi Port Demonstrates Capability
In a statement, Karachi Port said the arrival of MSC ERICA reaffirmed the port’s capability to accommodate ultra-large container vessels.
“One of the world’s largest container vessels arrived at Karachi Port on 12 July 2026, reaffirming its capability to handle ultra-large container ships,” the statement said.
According to the port authority, the ship’s master praised Karachi Port’s pilots for their professionalism and the smooth handling of the vessel.
He commended their “outstanding professionalism, safe ship handling and warm hospitality,” describing Karachi Port as “one of the best ports in the region.”
Maritime Modernisation Drive
The vessel’s arrival comes as Pakistan continues implementing reforms aimed at modernising its maritime sector through infrastructure development, improved customs procedures and greater investment in the country’s blue economy.
The government has identified the maritime sector as an important driver of economic growth, with efforts focused on improving operational efficiency and increasing the competitiveness of the country’s ports.
Earlier this month, officials announced that Karachi Port had climbed 30 places to 69th position in global port rankings following improvements in cargo handling, digitalisation and customs clearance. Port Qasim was also recognised among the world’s most improved ports.
Strengthening Global Trade Connectivity
Pakistan’s maritime sector handles the overwhelming majority of the country’s international trade, with Karachi Port and Port Qasim serving as its principal gateways for containerised cargo.
Officials say the ability to accommodate ultra-large container ships such as MSC ERICA will enhance shipping efficiency, reduce logistics costs and strengthen Pakistan’s integration into global supply chains.
They believe continued investment in modern port infrastructure will support the country’s long-term ambition to expand its maritime economy and reinforce its role as a regional trade and logistics hub connecting South Asia, the Middle East and beyond.
