LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar has said Pakistan has moved from the brink of default to macroeconomic stability, with the government now shifting its focus towards sustainable economic growth.

Addressing the Pakistani community in London, Dar said the country’s economic stability and international standing had improved significantly, describing the developments as evidence of a major change in Pakistan’s global perception.

He said inflation, which had been around 30 per cent, had declined to single digits, while the policy rate had fallen substantially from its peak of 22 per cent.

Dar said the economic improvements had created the foundation for the government to move beyond stabilisation and focus on sustainable growth.

Diplomatic gains

Turning to the country’s diplomatic achievements, Dar said the country’s election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council with 182 votes reflected growing international support.

He said Islamabad also remained actively engaged in diplomatic efforts concerning Gaza and other international crises.

The foreign minister attributed the country’s improved international standing to sustained diplomatic engagement as well as recent military successes.

He said Pakistan was increasingly being viewed as a positive security provider and had gained greater recognition for its role in promoting peace and stability internationally.

Dar said the country’s expanding diplomatic engagement and international partnerships, alongside improved economic stability, demonstrated a significant shift in how Pakistan was perceived globally.

Overseas Pakistanis

Dar described overseas Pakistanis as a major national asset, appreciating their contribution to the economy through remittances.

He said remittances had crossed $40 billion annually, strengthening the country’s foreign exchange position and helping bridge the country’s external financing gap.

He encouraged overseas Pakistanis to invest and save in Pakistan through formal channels, including Roshan Digital Accounts.

On the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, Dar described the arrangement as defensive in nature and aimed at strengthening regional stability.

He stressed that the agreement was not directed against any country, saying it sought to combine the three countries’ capabilities for mutual defence and regional security.

Dar said other countries could potentially join the framework in the future, subject to their agreement with its principles. The foreign minister called for continued national unity, stability and constructive engagement to take Pakistan to the next level.
