MINSK: Belarus likely to get full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the July 2024 summit in Kazakhstan, said Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Belarus, Yerlan Baizhanov.

Currently, Belarus is in the final stages of completing domestic procedures for joining the SCO as a full member. Out of the signatory countries, five have already ratified the memorandum, and China, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan are expected to follow suit.

“Kazakhstan has voiced political endorsement for Belarus’ accession process to the SCO,” the diplomat affirmed. “Belarus’ accession is anticipated to proceed smoothly, given Kazakhstan’s current presidency in the SCO and the upcoming summit scheduled for Astana,” he added confidently.

Assuring the confidence that Belarus will achieve full membership in the SCO at the forthcoming summit in July 2024, the diplomat highlighted Kazakhstan’s supportive role in the process.

The announcement aligns with Belarus’ recent ratification of the memorandum, formalizing its commitment to becoming a member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Law No. 313-Z, signed by the head of state and published on the national legal internet portal on November 27, 2023, signifies the country’s readiness.

To fulfill its SCO commitments, Belarus pledges adherence to the goals and principles outlined in the SCO Charter of June 7, 2002, as well as the provisions of the Treaty on Long-Term Good Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation among SCO member states dated August 16, 2007.
