Staff Report
LAHORE: Punjab Governor Muhammad Baligh-ur-Rehman on Friday said that the imposition of the governor’s rule is a constitutional process that is not easy to impose.
He said it could be a nightmare if imposed. He was speaking at the 20th convocation held at Government College University Lahore. He said that the governor’s rule is usually imposed when the law-and-order situation is bad. Few people are creating blockades on the entrance roads of the province, and roads should not be blocked in the name of protest, he said.
During his address, he said that politicians were not banned from entering universities. He added, “I have always been of the view that everyone should get a chance to express themselves, however, hate speech is banned all over the world and no one should be allowed to falsely accuse anyone.”
He advised the students not to become a tool for anyone rather they should see in which government’s tenure the country was developing. There is no harm in taking interest in politics but look at it with critical thinking and check out transparency International’s reports on which government was transparent. “By reviewing the available data related to all sectors, make up your mind about political parties,” The Governor said.
Governor Punjab and Vice-Chancellor Professor Asghar Zaidi awarded medals and degrees to nearly two thousand students in this year’s convocation, 52 scholars were awarded Ph.D. degrees.
Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Asghar Zaidi’s address to the students said that even after 75 years, we are still looking for a debatable country direction. Iqbal Day is the day of accountability and Iqbal’s philosophy provides us the way out of the existing socio-societal crisis in Pakistan.
He said that the system of evaluating students’ abilities is not good and teachers have to see if they are creating a sense of curiosity in students or not. The quality of research also needs to be checked, he added.
He briefed that the university is presenting Lifetime Achievement Award to ten alumni who have served the country in their respective fields and urged the teachers to work on five points to improve GCU.
“In two years, the admission system has changed and no one can get admission without passing an entry test and aptitude test. We have 80 active student societies and organized the first Student Societies Summit in Pakistan last year,” VC.
Furthermore, he shared that two new departments of pharmacy and chemical engineering are going to start next year and a new girls’ hostel is being constructed for 500 female students. Swimming pool construction will be completed by next year and a hostel of three hundred rooms is going to be set up for the players.
