NEW YORK: A set of six jerseys that star Argentinian footballer Lionel Messi wore during 2022 World Cup will be auctioned in December.

The London-based auctioneers Sotheby’s, estimated the value of shirts at $10 million.

The football sensation used these shirts during the first halves of the group-stage rounds. The shirt which he wore in the final against France is also included among the six shirts.

Last year Argentina won the world cup final held in Qatar defeating France.

Sotheby’s said if the jerseys fetch above $10 million, that could make the sale the most valuable collection of sports items ever auctioned.

The most expensive individual jersey sold at auction was of basketball legend Michael Jordan which he wore during his NBA finals run with the Chicago Bulls in 1998. It sold for a whopping price tag of $10.1 million last year.

Considering a growing market, the auction houses have shown their interest in sports memorabilia in recent years.

The jerseys are being brought to auction by US tech startup AC Momento, which assists athletes to manage memorabilia collections.

A portion of the amount after the auction will be donated to the UNICAS Project, an initiative of a Barcelona children’s hospital that treats kids with rare diseases.

The jerseys will be showcased for the public from November 30 to December 14.
