AMMAN: Jordan’s Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Soud, held a meeting with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative to Jordan, Philippe Duamelle, and discussed the pressing challenges faced by the country’s water sector.
The meeting, reported by Jordan News Agency, highlighted the need for solutions amidst depleting water resources and unpredictable rainfall patterns intensified by climate change.
Minister Abu Soud expressed deep concern regarding the depletion of water resources, emphasizing the significant impact of climate change-induced irregular rainfall on water availability for both citizens and host communities. The minister stressed the urgency of addressing this scarcity and called for expedited funding to implement projects that can meet the water demands of all regions, underlining the burden on the water sector due to the prevailing challenges.
UNICEF to Support Jordan’s Water Sector
In response, Duamelle reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s water sector, aligning its priorities with the ministry’s goals. He emphasized the importance of international aid to bolster Jordan’s water infrastructure, especially in light of funding reductions faced by UNICEF. Duamelle applauded Jordan’s robust partnership with UNICEF, focusing on enhancing access to water and sanitation services for disadvantaged communities and refugees, as well as building resilience in water systems against the impacts of climate change.
The partnership between Jordan and UNICEF continues to play a crucial role in ensuring the well-being of vulnerable populations and addressing the challenges posed by water scarcity, further underscored by Jordan’s ongoing efforts in hosting a substantial number of Syrian refugees.
