ISLAMABAD: World Muslim Congress has called for urgent action on Kashmir at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Altaf Hussain Wani, Representative of the World Muslim Congress (WMC), delivered a powerful statement during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on International Solidarity.
Wani implored the Special Rapporteur to prioritise a thorough investigation into the ongoing human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Right to self-determination
“For decades, the Kashmiri people have endured systemic injustices, repression, and a denial of their fundamental rights,” Wani said. “India’s assertion that the Kashmir issue is an internal matter is demonstrably false. This is fundamentally a matter of the right to self-determination for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have endured decades of occupation.”
He emphasised that genuine stability in the region cannot be achieved through the suppression of fundamental human rights, despite recent calls for stability. Wani urged the international community to move beyond expressions of concern and take concrete action to address the dire situation.
Commission of inquiry
The WMC has called on the UNHRC to establish a commission of inquiry to probe abuses in IIOJK and ensure accountability for perpetrators.
The organisation demanded unimpeded access for humanitarian organisations to provide essential healthcare, education, and livelihood support to the Kashmiri people.
Wani stressed that the special rapporteur on international solidarity’s attention to the situation is “not merely desired; it is a moral imperative.”
He further said, “The Kashmiri people deserve justice, dignity, and the opportunity to determine their own future. Let us uphold the principles of international solidarity and stand with them in their hour”.
