ISLAMABAD: As the FIFA World Cup 2026 approaches, Désiré Doué aims to give his best performance on football’s biggest stage. Every generation produces a special talent who grabs everyone’s attention. For France, that talent is Désiré Doué.

At just 20 years old, he already carries the hopes of his entire nation, shows technical skill similar to Brazilian greats, and plays with the calmness of an experienced veteran. With the tournament nearing, all eyes are on the Paris Saint-Germain prodigy, who has the ability to become the standout star of the World Cup.

Désiré Doué is a 20-year-old French footballer born on 8 March 2006 in Angers, France. He plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and the France national team.

Known for his exceptional technique, versatility, creativity, and dribbling skills, Doué is widely regarded as one of the best young talents in world football. In 2025, he scored two goals in PSG’s 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final and received the FIFA Best Young Player Award at the Club World Cup.

Doué holds both French and Ivorian citizenship, counts Neymar and Lionel Messi as his idols, and has drawn comparisons to Neymar due to his flair and attacking prowess.

From youth glory to senior stage

Doué was a youth international for France, representing the U17s and U19s. He played a key role in France’s winning campaign at the 2022 UEFA European Under-17 Championship and featured for the U19s in the 2024 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifiers.

He debuted for the France under-21 team on 13 October 2023 in a European qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina, though the night ended bitterly as he received two yellow cards and was sent off before the final whistle.

On 22 March 2024, Doué made his debut for the France Olympic football team in a friendly against Côte d’Ivoire, scoring two goals in a 3–2 win. He went on to play five matches at the 2024 Olympic Games, including a notable appearance off the bench in the final against Spain. France lost 5–3, settling for silver on home soil.

Breaking into the senior squad

On 13 March 2025, Doué received his first call-up to the France national team and made his debut in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League quarter-final against Croatia.

On 8 June 2025, he earned a bronze medal after France defeated Germany 2–0 to finish third in the Nations League. He played a total of 138 minutes in the tournament.

Then came his breakout international moment. On 29 March 2026, Doué scored his first two goals for France in a friendly against Colombia — a sign of things to come.

Why Doué could be a World Cup sensation

After France’s heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Argentina in the Qatar 2022 final, the nation began searching for the next generation of stars to replace Raphael Varane, Olivier Giroud, and Antoine Griezmann. Doué was just 17 at the time, but even though he had only just started at Rennes, he had already shown enough to be marked as a future French star.

Four years later, that talented youngster has blossomed exactly as many predicted. Now an essential part of the PSG machine, Doué is thrilling fans across France and beyond with his ability to shine in the biggest moments.

He followed up his two goals in PSG’s 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the 2024-2025 UEFA Champions League final by winning the FIFA Best Young Player Award at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

Already making his mark for France

Although Doué has only six French caps to his name, his most recent outing for Les Bleus in March showed just how important he will be for Didier Deschamps’ squad in North America. He opened his international goalscoring account with two strikes in a 3-1 win over Colombia in Maryland.

The former Rennes man will now look to conquer the world alongside French teammates including Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise, and Kylian Mbappé.

Style of play: The next Neymar?

Considered one of the best young players in the world, Doué’s natural position is attacking midfielder, but his versatility allows him to play deeper in midfield, on either wing, or as a forward. He is a dynamic box-to-box playmaker with an eye for goal, known for his supreme agility, acceleration, and pace — combined with excellent dribbling, shooting, and passing.

According to journalist Liam Tharme of The Athletic, Doué’s super-strength is ball carrying. He ranked inside the top two percent of central midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues during the 2022–23 season for progressive carries (3.4 per 90) and the top one percent for successful dribbles (3.9).

ESPN describes Doué as “an entertainer at heart, full of tricks and skills designed to shake up opponents.” Despite being primarily an attacking player, he also contributes defensively, averaging more than three tackles per game in Ligue 1 — placing him in the top six percent of midfielders in the league.

Doué has drawn comparisons to former PSG star Neymar, particularly after his arrival at the French club, where he has been cited as the Brazilian’s heir due to his creativity, flair, dribbling prowess, and eye for goal.
