TAMPA, Florida: The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced that its forces will begin supporting a new mission, titled “Project Freedom”, from May 4, aimed at restoring and safeguarding freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz.
According to an official statement, the operation has been authorised at the direction of the US President Donald Trump and is designed to ensure that merchant vessels can transit the waterway without disruption.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors, handling roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil trade, alongside significant shipments of fuel and fertiliser products.
CENTCOM emphasised that maintaining uninterrupted access through the strait is critical not only for regional stability but also for the smooth functioning of the global economy.
The mission comes amid heightened tensions affecting maritime movement in the region.
“Our support for this defensive mission is essential to regional security and the global economy, as we also maintain the naval blockade,” said Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, underlining the strategic importance of the initiative.
The operation will involve a substantial deployment of military assets, including guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 land- and sea-based aircraft, and a range of multi-domain unmanned systems.
In addition, approximately 15,000 service personnel will be engaged in supporting the mission.
The announcement follows a recent initiative by the US Department of State, in collaboration with the Department of War, aimed at strengthening coordination among international partners.
This effort, known as the Maritime Freedom Construct, seeks to integrate diplomatic engagement with military coordination to enhance maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Officials noted that the combined approach of diplomatic outreach and operational readiness will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of Project Freedom, particularly in maintaining safe passage for global trade amid ongoing regional challenges.
