WASHINGTON: A United States court has suspended sanctions imposed on Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory, marking a significant legal development in a case that has drawn international attention.

Albanese announced the court’s decision in a post shared on X, stating that the judge had ruled that “protecting the freedom of speech is always in the public interest”. The remarks came shortly after the court moved to halt the restrictions introduced during the Trump administration.

Expressing gratitude following the ruling, Albanese thanked her husband and daughter for standing by her throughout the legal proceedings. She also acknowledged the support she had received from others during the dispute.

“I thank my daughter and husband for stepping up to defend me, and everyone who has helped so far,” she wrote, adding: “Together we are one.”

The sanctions, introduced in July 2025 by the administration of US President Donald Trump, included a ban on Albanese entering the United States and restrictions affecting her access to banking and financial services.

At the time, the US State Department accused Albanese of “engaging in lawfare” and alleged that she had demonstrated “unabashed antisemitism, support for terrorism, and open contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West”.

Albanese has consistently rejected accusations levelled against her and has remained vocal on issues concerning the humanitarian and political situation in the occupied Palestinian territories during her tenure as UN rapporteur.

The court’s decision to suspend the sanctions is expected to intensify debate surrounding freedom of expression, diplomatic accountability, and the role of UN-appointed independent experts in addressing international conflicts and human rights concerns.
