  • MV Shu Long carries over 16,000 metric tons of cargo
  • Minister links arrival to regional maritime disruptions
  • Concessions and discounts aim to attract transhipment traffic

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Gwadar Port has received its first transhipment vessel of May, indicating growing activity at the country’s strategic maritime hub amid shifting regional trade dynamics.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said the vessel, MV Shuo Long, carrying 16,077 metric tons of cargo, anchored at the port earlier this week.

“Due to the current situation in the region, the vessel was redirected towards Gwadar,” the minister said, pointing to ongoing disruptions in key shipping routes across the Middle East.

He added that berthing and cargo handling operations were proceeding efficiently, reflecting improved port readiness and operational capacity.

“Gwadar Port is increasingly gaining a key position among alternative trade routes,” Chaudhry said, noting that four transhipment vessels had called at the port during April.

The development comes as maritime trade routes face uncertainty and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, prompting shipping lines to explore safer and cost-effective alternatives.

Analysts say such disruptions are opening new transhipment opportunities for ports like Gwadar, which sits at a key junction connecting South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Authorities have, in recent months, introduced a range of incentives to attract transhipment business, including discounted port charges, reduced wharfage fees and preferential tariffs on container handling at Gwadar and other Pakistani ports.

Officials say these concessions, combined with Gwadar’s strategic location under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, are aimed at positioning Pakistan as a competitive regional logistics hub.

“In light of the regional maritime situation, Gwadar’s strategic importance is continuously increasing, and the port is becoming a reliable hub for global trade,” Chaudhry said.
