ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has concluded a five-day national workshop on nuclear safety-related equipment, bringing together regulators, nuclear installation operators and international experts to strengthen confidence in the reliability of components used at nuclear facilities.

The workshop on Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGD) was organised by the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at PNRA headquarters from October 5 to 9.

Organised by the National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS), an IAEA Collaboration Centre for nuclear safety and radiation protection, the workshop focused on procedures for assessing commercially manufactured items before they are used in nuclear safety-related applications.

Commercial Grade Item Dedication is a process through which items not originally manufactured specifically for nuclear applications can be assessed for suitability. It involves identifying critical safety characteristics and verifying them through inspection, testing, analysis or other appropriate methods to establish confidence that the items can perform their intended safety functions reliably.

Speaking at the workshop, PNRA Member (Executive) Shahid Rashid stressed the importance of reliable and qualified equipment for the safe operation of nuclear installations.

He noted that technological advances, equipment obsolescence and changes in global supply chains could affect the availability of specialised nuclear-grade components. CGD, he said, provides a mechanism to establish whether commercially available items meet the requirements of their intended use in nuclear facilities.

The workshop featured four international experts: Man Liu from the IAEA, Pekka Tapani Pyy from Finland, and Kwang Young Sohn and Yun Goo Kim from the Republic of Korea. They shared international experience and practical knowledge on CGD procedures and nuclear supply-chain management.

According to the PNRA, the workshop contributed to strengthening Pakistan’s capabilities in nuclear safety and supply-chain oversight, in line with applicable requirements and international good practices.
