ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to the objectives of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, emphasising that it upholds the highest safety standards across all nuclear installations, including robust oversight of its nuclear power plants.
The country expressed its commitment while participating in the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety held under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna from 13 to 24 April 2026, a press release said on Thursday.
Pakistan has been a State Party to the Convention on Nuclear Safety since 1997 and continues to implement its obligations in an effective manner. It is a matter of national pride that Pakistan also chaired the 10th Review Meeting of the Convention.
The Pakistani delegation was led by Chairman of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), Zia Hussain Shah, and included senior officials from the PNRA, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Pakistan’s Permanent Mission in Vienna, and technical experts.
The delegation actively engaged with other member states, presenting Pakistan’s compliance record and participating constructively in the peer review process.
“During the meeting, Pakistan presented its National Report, highlighting the country’s strong nuclear safety framework and ongoing improvements in its regulatory infrastructure,” the press release said.
The delegation reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety across all nuclear installations, including effective oversight of nuclear power plants.
Pakistan also reiterated its commitment to the objectives of the Convention on Nuclear Safety, underscoring its continued role in strengthening the global nuclear safety regime under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) framework.
The international community also acknowledged Pakistan’s support programme for newcomer countries, aimed at helping them develop and implement effective regulatory oversight for nuclear power projects.
