LAHORE: Members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) walked out of the Punjab Assembly session which was called to elect the chief minister today in protest following the speaker turned down their request to address the session.
The session of the provincial assembly began with over a 30-minute delay and was being presided over by newly-elected Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan.
Earlier, PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz has reached Punjab Assembly ahead of vote for chief minister’s elections, local media reported on Monday. Maryam Nawaz is her party’s candidate for the CM’s stance and will be up against PTI-backed candidate Rana Aftab Ahmed.
Punjab is likely to elect the first ever female chief minister in Pakistan’s history in form of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s (PML-N) Maryam Nawaz as voting for the Chief Minister slot is taking place in Punjab Assembly today. She has a support of around 225 lawmakers in the House and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) has fielded Rana Aftab Ahmad Khan.
Maryam Nawaz got elected from two seats of Lahore including PP-159 and NA 119 and she retained the provincial assembly seat.
