TEHRAN: Iranian authorities have foiled an assassination attempt on Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Amini, a young woman whose tragic death in police custody last year ignited nationwide protests. The incident occurred on Saturday, which marked the first anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s passing.

The official IRNA news agency reported that the thwarted attack took place as Amjad Amini was en route to visit his daughter’s resting place at the Aichi cemetery in the western town of Saqez.

According to Deputy Governor of Kurdistan province, Mehdi Ramezani, “Security forces arrested several members of a terrorist group who wanted to assassinate Amjad Amini.” The official statement did not disclose the identities of those arrested or provide details about the alleged terrorist group, stating only that the attempt on Amjad Amini’s life “was foiled.”

Masha Amini’s Custodial Death

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, tragically passed away in police custody on September 16 of the previous year, following her arrest for an alleged violation of the Islamic Republic’s stringent dress code for women.

Her untimely death triggered months of widespread protests across Iran. The Iranian government, categorizing the protests as “riots” instigated by foreign governments and “hostile media,” responded with a crackdown.
