TEHRAN: Iran on Saturday summoned the United Kingdom’s (UK) ambassador over London’s alleged interference in countrywide protests in Iran, local media reported.
In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that it summoned the UK’s envoy to protest what it (Tehran) called a “meddlesome” by top UK officials about “internal affairs” of Iran and support for “acts of unrest” in Iran. The statement added that Iran condemned the acts of British officials. Iran also lodged a protest over the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom against some citizens of Iran, it said.

The development came following the foreign secretary of the United Kingdom expressing “outrage” over the matter of Mohsen Shikari. On Friday, Iran’s chargé d’affaires in United Kingdom’s capital was summoned by the British Foreign Office over the matter.
It may be recalled that the court in Iran had awarded a sentence of death to 11 persons after the months-long unrest in the country. Several Western countries, including the United Kingdom, the US, Germany, France, and Canada condemned it.
Earlier, the German ambassador in Tehran was also summoned by the foreign ministry of Iran over the matter.
