STOCKHOLM, Sweden: Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, with the Swedish Academy praising her “bold and inventive oeuvre” and her innovative dialogue with classical traditions.

At 76, Carson has become one of the most prominent contemporary literary figures to receive the prestigious award. The Swedish Academy said her work has created “new forms for contemporary literature” by bringing together poetry, prose, translation, scholarship and classical literature.

A unique literary voice

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson is widely recognised for her genre-defying writing and translations of ancient Greek literature. Her work frequently combines classical mythology and philosophy with contemporary experiences and experimental literary forms.

Among her best-known works are “Autobiography of Red,” “The Beauty of the Husband,” “Nox,” and “Norma Jeane Baker of Troy.” Her writing has earned numerous international literary honours, including the Griffin Poetry Prize and the T. S. Eliot Prize.

The Swedish Academy highlighted Carson’s particular fascination with language and etymology, describing her literary production as an intersection between the precision of a philologist and the creative search of a poet.

Reaction to Nobel recognition

Carson was in Iceland when she received the news and expressed surprise at being selected for the world’s most prestigious literary award. She has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022 and divides her time between Iceland and New York.

Carson is the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since Alice Munro received the award in 2013. She joins a distinguished group of literary Nobel laureates whose works have shaped global literature.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor, alongside the Nobel medal and diploma. The formal Nobel Prize ceremony will take place in Stockholm in December.
