ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday said that strict traffic rules and public awareness about road safety were crucial in preventing road accidents and reducing fatalities.
Addressing the road safety seminar for parliamentarians, the president urged the legislators to work on comprehensive road safety programs and bring them into national planning.
Stressing the role of legislators in carrying out effective lawmaking on road safety, he said that educating communities on road safety was essential.
The president said that with increased traffic on roads, the importance of ensuring safety measures had also increased manifold to save precious lives.
He said that traffic accidents were one of the major causes of deaths across the world. Implementation of traffic rules through safe road infrastructure, surveillance cameras, proper inspection of vehicles and easy-to-understand traffic illustrations could help in reducing accidents.

President Dr. Arif Alvi also emphasized self-discipline by motorists, especially the regular use of seat-belts and helmets.
He also advised people to remain mentally and physically alert to avoid traffic crashes. Parliamentarians from across the globe attended the seminar, held by International Parliamentarians Congress in collaboration with Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Service and a European Union-funded project Mutehtakm Parlimaan.
