ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s security forces killed nine Indian-backed terrorists during an intelligence-based operation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s North Waziristan, security sources said on Thursday.

The operations were conducted in Palangzai, Nadeem Kot, and Kot Khazri areas, killing nine Fitna al-Khwarij terrorists, including four “important terrorist commanders”.

Fitna al-Khawarij is the term used by the state to refer to terrorists affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

According to security sources, a large quantity of weapons and ammunition was also recovered from the terrorists.

A day earlier, security forces killed 18 Indian-backed terrorists in separate intelligence-based operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces.

President, PM commend security forces

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have praised security forces for their successful operation in North Waziristan.

In a statement, the President said every conspiracy by the foreign backed terrorists and their local facilitators would be foiled. He said operations against Fitna al-Khawarij under Azm-e-Istehkam would continue until the complete elimination of terrorism.

The Prime Minister said successful operations by the security forces against Fitna al-Khawarij reflect the state’s unwavering resolve to completely eliminate terrorism.

He said the officers and personnel of the security forces are rendering commendable services for eliminating terrorism and establishing lasting peace in the country.

“We will not allow terrorists to spread unrest in the country or succeed in their sordid designs,” he added.

Pakistan witnesses significant rise in terrorist attacks

The country has witnessed a significant rise in cross-border terrorist attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021.

It recorded its highest monthly number of militant attacks in 12 years in September 2026.

According to data compiled by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), an Islamabad-based independent think tank that monitors anti-state violence in the region, 225 terrorist attacks were reported across the country in September, up from 199 in August, marking a 13% increase. The number of attacks rose for the third consecutive month.

Islamabad has repeatedly urged Kabul to prevent its territory from being used by terrorist organisations to carry out attacks inside the South Asian nation.

The country maintains that the Afghan Taliban authorities have failed to take effective action against groups responsible for attacks on the security forces and civilians, a claim disputed by Kabul.

it launched Operation Ghazab lil-Haq in February 2026, months after the two countries agreed to a ceasefire in October 2025 following clashes at several points along the border.
