KARACHI: Pakistan’s top cyclists will converge on Karachi this week as the 10th National Road Cycling Championship begins on October 9, bringing together athletes from across the country in a three-day national competition.
The championship, organised by the Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF), will feature competitions in men’s, women’s, junior, para-cycling and masters categories, providing cyclists of different ages and abilities an opportunity to compete at the national level.

Cyclists from across Pakistan to compete
The championship will officially begin at 9am on Friday at Bahria Town Karachi, with events continuing until October 11. The closing ceremony and prize distribution will be held at 4pm on October 11.
Cyclists representing the Pakistan Army, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Islamabad will participate in the championship.
Other institutions and cycling teams, including Kareng Aidak and the Pakistan Cycling Academy, will also compete in the event.
The PCF has introduced an Open Masters category this year, allowing cyclists from Karachi and other parts of Pakistan to compete against experienced riders at the national level.

Para-cycling adds inclusive dimension
Para-cycling has also been included in the championship to provide cyclists with disabilities an opportunity to compete nationally, demonstrate their abilities and gain greater recognition in competitive sport.
The federation said accommodation and other arrangements had been made at Bahria Town Karachi for cyclists and officials travelling from different parts of Pakistan.

PCF President Syed Azhar Ali Shah said national-level sporting competitions were essential for engaging young people in positive activities and providing emerging athletes with opportunities to showcase their talent.
“In the present circumstances, continuing sporting activities and providing young athletes with opportunities to demonstrate their abilities at the national level is the need of the hour,” Shah said.

He also called on media organisations across Pakistan to provide comprehensive coverage of the championship, saying greater media attention would help promote cycling, encourage young riders and highlight the achievements of Pakistani athletes.
