ISLAMABAD: Pakistan security forces have killed 18 Indian-backed terrorists in separate intelligence-based operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, state media reported on Wednesday, citing security sources.

The forces conducted the operations in North Waziristan district and Mastung district as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts under the government’s Azm-e-Istehkam strategy and Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3.

In North Waziristan, security forces targeted hideouts of terrorists belonging to Fitna al-Khawarij in the district and adjoining areas, killing 13 terrorists during an intelligence-based operation, the sources said.

In a separate operation in the Siyah Pasht and Killi Gashtari areas of Mastung, security forces targeted hideouts of terrorists belonging to Fitna al-Hindustan (India-backed terrorists), killing five terrorists, according to the sources.

A large quantity of weapons and ammunition was recovered from the killed terrorists, the sources said.

Clearance and search operations were continuing in the areas to locate any remaining terrorists and secure the affected locations, they added.

Security forces remain determined to eliminate terrorism and establish lasting peace under the Azm-e-Istehkam strategy.

According to the security sources, operations against terrorists in Balochistan would continue until the terrorist threat was eliminated, the sources said.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif separately commended the security forces for the operations and praised their professionalism and capabilities.

According to the President’s Media Wing, Zardari specifically praised the killing of five Fitna al-Hindustan terrorists in Mastung.

The president said the operations reflected the nation’s resolve against terrorism and expressed confidence that the plans of terrorists, their foreign backers and local facilitators would be thwarted.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Shehbaz commended the officers and personnel involved in the North Waziristan operation, saying the security forces had effectively targeted terrorist hideouts in the area and its surroundings.

The prime minister said operations against Fitna al-Khawarij would continue until terrorism was eliminated and lasting peace was established in Pakistan.

He said counterterrorism operations under Azm-e-Istehkam reflected the state’s determination to eliminate terrorism.

Security sources vowed that terrorists seeking to undermine the country’s peace and security would not be allowed to achieve their objectives.

North Waziristan and Mastung have remained important areas of counterterrorism operations because terrorists are using the difficult Afghanistan-bordering terrain as refuge and hideouts.

Pakistan has intensified intelligence-based operations against terrorist networks as attacks and security threats have increased in parts of the country.

Pakistan’s security forces regularly conduct such operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, targeting terrorist hideouts, weapons caches and support networks.

Fitna al-Khawarij is the term used by Pakistani authorities for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Meanwhile, Fitna al-Hindustan is a term used by the authorities for Balochistan-based terrorist elements.

The government has said its counterterrorism campaign will continue until armed groups are eliminated.
