ISLAMABAD: A delegation of the US Afghanistan War Commission has acknowledged Pakistan’s longstanding role and sacrifices during the conflict in Afghanistan and appreciated its continued contribution to regional peace and stability.

The delegation, led by Co-Chairs Shamila N. Chaudhary and Dr Colin F. Jackson, expressed these views during a meeting with the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ), Rawalpindi, the military’s media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said in a statement on Monday.

The high-level meeting came as the Commission undertakes a review of the United States’ two-decade engagement in Afghanistan.

“Discussions covered matters of mutual interest including Pakistan’s support, the regional security environment and developments in Afghanistan, with focus on perspectives relevant to the Commission’s work,” ISPR said.

Pakistan’s role in Afghanistan conflict discussed

Field Marshal Asim Munir presented Pakistan’s perspective on the security dynamics that shaped the course of the Afghanistan conflict and highlighted the challenges Pakistan faced throughout the prolonged war.

He underscored the importance of incorporating the regional perspective and Pakistan’s experience in assessing the strategic, diplomatic and operational dimensions of the conflict, ISPR said.

Use of Afghan territory for terrorism against Pakistan

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the United Nations General Assembly on Friday that terrorism is a grave threat to international peace and security, emphasising that Pakistan had sacrificed “almost 100,000 precious lives” and suffered economic losses of over $150 billion in combating terrorism.

He added that Afghan territory continued to be exploited by terrorist groups including the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) terrorist groups to carry out attacks against Pakistan. “These foreign-funded groups operated from sanctuaries in Afghanistan intending to destabilise Pakistan,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Sharif called on the Afghan Taliban regime to halt all such terrorist attacks, fulfil their international commitments and take “verifiable, decisive action to ensure that Afghan soil is never again used against Pakistan or any other country”.
