WASHINGTON, US: US President Donald Trump has shared a video of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the United Nations General Assembly session, highlighting PM Sharif’s thanks for Trump’s role in helping end the 2025 India-Pakistan military confrontation.

Trump posted an 87-second extract from Prime Minister Sharif’s address on his Truth Social account without an accompanying comment. In his speech, Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan responded to the Indian aggression in self-defence and praised Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for a strong response to Indian aggression against Pakistan. PM Sharif also thanked Trump for his “timely intervention” at a critical moment.

Trump and Shehbaz highlight different accounts of 2025 conflict

PM Sharif told the 81st UN General Assembly that Trump’s intervention came when the two nuclear-armed neighbours were at the brink of a wider conflict. He said the intervention helped create conditions for the confrontation to end and urged efforts to prevent South Asia from returning to a similar crisis.

Trump had also referred to the India-Pakistan confrontation during his own UN General Assembly address earlier this week, where he highlighted his administration’s role in ending several conflicts and spoke positively about Prime Minister Sharif. Trump described PM Sharif a “terrific man”.

Emphasising that multilateralism is the “need of the hour,” PM Sharif reaffirmed that Pakistan’s policy is guided by the principle of peaceful settlement of disputes through diplomacy.

“We have won the war, now we seek to win peace,” PM Sharif declared, extending an offer for a “composite, comprehensive, peace-oriented dialogue with India on all outstanding issues.” He stressed that the region requires “productive rather than provocative leadership.”

While expressing gratitude for US President Donald Trump’s “bold and visionary leadership” in facilitating a ceasefire with India, an effort for which he nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, Sharif made it clear that Pakistan’s military response to aggression was decisive.
