ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s monsoon rains have claimed at least 183 lives and injured 515 people, while thousands of homes, livestock and public infrastructure have been damaged, as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecast another spell of rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds across several regions.
According to the latest statistics released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), 1,772 houses and 1,516 livestock have been damaged during the ongoing monsoon season.
The NDMA said 34.82 kilometres of roads and 41 bridges had also been damaged between June 26 and September 13. Authorities have so far conducted 1,178 rescue and evacuation operations and established 1,814 relief, medical and heatwave camps.
The latest figures came as the PMD forecast rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds in Sindh, Punjab and other parts of the country, directing relevant departments to remain prepared for possible emergencies.
According to PMD, from the evening/night of September 14 to September 17, rain-wind/thundershowers, with isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms, are expected in Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, D.I. Khan, Bannu and Waziristan, with occasional gaps.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, the PMD has forecast rain-wind/thundershowers, with moderate to isolated heavy rainfall, in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar from September 12 to September 17, with occasional gaps.

The PMD said a low-pressure system was expected to move northwestwards, bringing rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds to several parts of Sindh from September 13 to September 15.

Rain is expected in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal and Tando Muhammad Khan. Sanghar, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Jamshoro are also likely to receive rainfall from September 14 to 15.
Karachi may experience light rain and thunderstorms from September 14 to 16. Although the showers could provide relief from the prevailing heat, rainfall may also cause difficulties in some parts of the city.

In Punjab, the ninth and final monsoon spell is forecast to continue, with most districts, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, Jhelum and Attock, likely to receive rain from September 12 to 17.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala and Faisalabad face risks of urban and flash flooding due to the expected rainfall.

The PMD has also cautioned against possible landslides in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas during periods of heavy rain.
Relevant departments have been directed to remain alert and ensure emergency arrangements are in place.
