ISLAMABAD: The killing of Fitna-ul-Hindustan Balochistan Liberation Army’s (BLA) senior commander, Dr Abdul Rashid alias “Nokab”, during clashes with Iranian security forces in Saravan has raised fresh questions over the presence and activities of BLA operatives on Iranian territory, while also exposing the foreign-sponsored ecosystem sustaining cross-border terrorism.
“Nokab”, a senior BLA commander, was killed in Saravan while clashes were taking place with Iranian security forces. His killing has highlighted facts that the terrorist organisation has used territory on the Iranian side of the Iran- Pakistan border to conceal operatives, maintain communication networks and facilitate its activities.

“Nokab” had remained active in Iran for several years and was involved in maintaining links with the proscribed BLA’s senior leadership. He was also an associate of BLA commander Dr Naseer and a member of the group’s senior operational network.
The killing of the commander could represent a significant setback for the BLA’s leadership and organisational structure, particularly when his role involved facilitating contacts and operations from Iranian territory.
The development has also renewed attention on the wider issue of cross-border terrorism along the Iran-Pakistan frontier. Pakistan has repeatedly raised concerns about terrorists using neighbouring territories to plan, organise or support attacks inside the country, and has called for stronger cooperation to prevent such activities.
Security concerns surrounding the BLA have intensified in recent years following a series of deadly attacks in Balochistan and other parts of Pakistan. Islamabad has held foreign actors of backing or facilitating terrorist groups operating against Pakistan.

The latest assertions have further fuelled contentions of a wider transnational support network involving terrorist elements, foreign sponsorship and cross-border facilitation.
Pakistani security circles have also found links between the BLA and an Indian-backed network, while further assertions have referred to an Indian-Israeli nexus behind efforts to destabilise Pakistan.
The presence of senior BLA figures in Iran is likely to increase pressure for stronger security coordination between Tehran and Islamabad, particularly over the movement of terrorists and the use of border areas by armed groups.
Pakistan has consistently maintained that terrorism cannot be effectively countered if terrorist, facilitators and support networks are able to operate from neighbouring territories. Islamabad has therefore called for coordinated regional efforts to dismantle terrorist sanctuaries, disrupt financing and communications, and prevent cross-border territory from being used to sustain attacks.
The killing of “Nokab” could thus have implications beyond the BLA itself, potentially adding to existing security concerns between Iran and Pakistan over terrorist activity along their shared border.
