ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s upper and central parts are expected to receive monsoon rains from Saturday, September 12, with temperatures likely to drop during the forecast period, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Friday.
In its advisory, the Met Office said monsoon currents were penetrating the upper parts of the country, while a westerly wave was likely to enter the region during the weekend and strengthen on September 14.

The weather system is expected to bring rain, wind and thundershowers to several regions from September 12 to 17, with occasional gaps.
Rain forecast for northern areas
In Kashmir, rain, wind and thundershowers are expected from September 12 to 17, with isolated hailstorms possible in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.
Similar weather conditions are forecast for Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang and Attock during the same period.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain, wind and thundershowers are expected in Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, DI Khan, Bannu and Waziristan.

The PMD also forecast rain, wind and thundershowers, with isolated heavy rainfall, in Gilgit-Baltistan, including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar.

Rain expected in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan
In Punjab, rain accompanied by wind and thundershowers is expected in Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Wazirabad, Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan and surrounding areas from the evening of September 12 to September 17.

Most parts of Sindh are expected to remain hot and humid. However, rain, wind and thunderstorms, with isolated heavy rainfall, are forecast in Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Thatta, Badin, Karachi and surrounding areas from the evening of September 13 to September 16.
Balochistan is also expected to remain mainly hot and humid, although rainfall is likely in Zhob, Barkhan, Musakhel and surrounding areas from September 13 to 16.

PMD warns of flooding and landslides
The weather department warned that heavy rains could cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Lahore from September 14 to 17.
It also cautioned that flash floods could occur in local streams and nullahs in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

Landslides are also possible in hilly areas of KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir during the forecast period.

The PMD advised tourists and travellers to remain cautious and urged farmers to plan crop-related activities according to the expected weather conditions.
