PHILADELPHIA: Ian Machado Garry arrived at UFC 330 with many of the qualities considered necessary to trouble Islam Makhachev: size, reach, movement, takedown defence and confidence. Five rounds later, the question surrounding the Russian champion remained unchanged — what exactly will it take to stop him?
Makhachev retained his welterweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Garry in Philadelphia, with the judges scoring the contest 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47. The result improved his professional record to 29-1 and extended his UFC winning streak to a record 17 fights.

This was not another effortless Makhachev performance.
Garry used his length effectively, defended several grappling exchanges and enjoyed periods of success on the feet. UFC statistics showed Garry landed 29 significant strikes compared with Makhachev’s 22, evidence that the challenger was able to make portions of the fight uncomfortable.
Yet Makhachev once again found another route to victory.
His wrestling repeatedly disrupted Garry’s rhythm, while a head kick in the second round demonstrated the striking threat opponents cannot ignore while preparing for his takedowns. When Garry increased the pressure later in the contest, Makhachev returned to his strongest weapon and controlled crucial exchanges on the ground.
The Islam Makhachev problem
That adaptability may be the biggest obstacle facing the rest of the welterweight division.
Opponents cannot simply build a strategy around stopping takedowns because doing so creates opportunities for Makhachev’s striking. Attacking aggressively carries another risk: closing distance can give one of the UFC’s strongest grapplers the openings he needs.

Garry arguably provided one clue. His movement, reach and improving takedown defence made the champion work harder than many previous opponents. But surviving Makhachev’s strongest areas proved different from winning enough rounds against him.

Even UFC chief Dana White questioned whether Garry showed sufficient urgency in the final round when he needed to change the fight’s direction.
Attention now shifts to who gets the next opportunity.
Carlos Prates currently sits first in the UFC welterweight rankings, followed by Garry and unbeaten contender Michael Morales. Prates has built momentum with powerful finishes, while Morales offers youth, size and explosive striking.

Those challengers may bring different problems, but Makhachev has already shown that solving one part of his game is rarely enough.
After 17 consecutive UFC victories, beating him appears to require something much harder: matching his wrestling, surviving his striking and maintaining near-perfect discipline for 25 minutes.
So far, nobody has managed all three.
