CURITIBA, Brazil: Coritiba defender Jacy Maranhão’s goal celebration took a painful turn when he leapt over an advertising board and fell into a tunnel instead of landing on the ground.

The 29-year-old headed his team into a 1-0 lead against Chapecoense in the 41st minute of their Brazilian league match. Overjoyed by the goal, Maranhão ran towards the supporters and jumped over the perimeter hoardings. However, instead of reaching the crowd, he tumbled into an open passageway that led directly to the dressing rooms.

According to the BBC, Maranhão managed to climb back out but suffered an ankle injury in the fall.
To add to his disappointment, VAR later reviewed the goal and disallowed it for offside. The decision wiped out what would have been his moment of glory.
Coritiba still managed to win the match 2-1. However, Maranhão was substituted shortly after half-time due to his injured ankle.

Speaking after the game, Maranhão played down the incident. “I twisted my foot there; it was a bit sore, but I’m fine,” he said. “When you do score… I just got carried away.”

This was not the first time such an incident has occurred at Couto Pereira Stadium. In 2014, Cameroon striker Joel jumped over the same barriers during a celebration and fell into the identical passageway during a match against São Paulo.
