ISLAMABAD: United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has commended Pakistan’s efforts to restore peace and stability in the Middle East.

The UN humanitarian chief made the remarks during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad on Wednesday, a PM House’s media wing statement said.

He stressed that sustainable peace is essential to addressing the humanitarian and economic consequences of conflicts.

The Prime Minister appreciated the invaluable humanitarian work being undertaken by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in responding to emergencies across the world.

OCHA’s support for Pakistan

PM Sharif acknowledged OCHA’s continued support to Pakistan, particularly during the devastating floods of 2022, and thanked the organisation for its assistance in strengthening the country’s disaster response efforts.

Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan’s national and provincial disaster management institutions have significantly strengthened their capacity to respond to climate-induced disasters over the years.

He, however, stressed that the growing frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters highlight the need for greater preparedness, enhanced resilience, and stronger coordination among stakeholders at the national, regional, and international levels.

“Tom Fletcher thanked the Prime Minister for receiving him and appreciated the longstanding partnership and close cooperation between Pakistan and OCHA,” he said.
