ISLAMABAD: Unbeaten. Unbowed. Unforgiving. France and Spain have carved their paths to the semifinals without ever staring at a deficit, but on Tuesday, one flawless journey ends. Under the colossal roof of AT&T Stadium, two footballing dynasties collide, with Kylian Mbappé’s cold-blooded experience squaring off against Lamine Yamal’s burning ambition, and a place in the July 19 final on the line.

Tuesday’s semifinal will mark the 39th meeting between these two European giants. Looking at their overall history, Spain hold the advantage with 18 wins compared to France’s 13, while seven matches have ended in draws. Spain have also scored more goals in these encounters, finding the net 71 times against France’s 44.

However, when it comes to the World Cup stage, the story is completely different. The two nations have met only once previously at football’s biggest tournament, a round-of-16 clash in Germany back in 2006. On that occasion, France came from behind to win 3-1 after Spain had taken an early lead through David Villa. Goals from Franck Ribery, Patrick Vieira, and Zinedine Zidane secured France’s only World Cup victory over Spain.

Recent form: Spain’s semifinal dominance

While France boast the World Cup edge, recent history heavily favors Spain. La Roja have won the two most recent semifinal encounters between these sides, both in dramatic fashion.

At Euro 2024, Spain recovered from an early French goal to win 2-1, with Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo finding the net. Then in last year’s Nations League semifinal, Spain survived a late France comeback to win a stunning 5-4 thriller in Stuttgart. Overall, Spain have won three of the last five meetings between the two nations, giving them a significant psychological advantage heading into Tuesday’s clash.

Semifinal pedigree: Experience vs Perfection

The two nations bring very different semifinal histories to this contest. France are playing in their seventh World Cup semifinal, their fifth in the last eight tournaments. Les Bleus have won their last four semifinal appearances, beating Croatia in 1998, Portugal in 2006, Belgium in 2018, and Morocco in 2022. They are now seeking to become only the second European nation after West Germany to reach three consecutive World Cup finals.

Spain, by contrast, have reached only their third World Cup semifinal, having previously appeared in 1950 and 2010, the latter on their way to lifting the trophy. Remarkably, Spain have never conceded a goal in a World Cup semifinal, have never lost one, and have always gone on to win the tournament after reaching this stage.

Tournament form comparison

France have been the most clinical side in the tournament, scoring 16 goals while conceding just two. Spain, meanwhile, have been the most solid defensively, conceding only one goal in six matches until Belgium finally broke through in their quarterfinal. Both teams have taken 110 shots each, with France’s expected goals standing at 13.31 compared to Spain’s 12.75.

Spain have dominated possession with 66 percent, the highest of any team at this World Cup, and share the joint-best passing accuracy at 90.4 percent. They have also been the hardest-working team among the semifinalists, covering more ground, sprinting more, and pressing the opposition the most.

The individual battle: Mbappé vs Yamal

Mbappé has been the tournament’s pure finisher, scoring eight goals from an expected tally of just over five. He requires only 47 minutes to produce a goal contribution, a level of consistency that is nothing short of devastating. The 27-year-old has also provided three assists and averages five shots per game, with just over three of those hitting the target. He has created 16 key passes for his teammates.

Yamal’s tournament has been more about balance and work rate. He has scored just one goal from his 10 shots on target, with no assists to his name. He averages nearly four shots per game, with just under two hitting the target, and has created five key passes. However, the teenager covers over nine kilometers per 90 minutes with more than 10 sprints, and his dribble success rate of 53 percent actually outshines Mbappé’s 43 percent.

Remarkably, Yamal has won eight of his ten encounters against Mbappé across all competitions since their first meeting in 2023, despite the Frenchman scoring more goals, nine in those fixtures. This personal head-to-head record will add extra intrigue to their semifinal duel.

France enter the contest as FIFA’s top-ranked team, having outscored opponents by a staggering 14-2 margin overall. Mbappé, the 2022 Golden Boot winner, has eight goals to match Lionel Messi for the tournament lead and sits just one goal behind the Argentine legend’s career World Cup record of 21.

The 27-year-old has scored 20 goals in his 20 World Cup matches, including one in the 2018 final against Croatia when he joined Pele as the only teenagers to score in a World Cup final. Coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed Mbappé is physically fit after being substituted in the 77th minute of France’s quarterfinal victory over Morocco following his goal in that match.

Yamal, who turned 19 on July 13, has already been part of two semifinal wins over France, the Euro 2024 triumph and last year’s Nations League thriller. After Spain’s quarterfinal victory over Belgium, he declared: “I believe if France has to fear anyone, it should be us, in my opinion. We were the ones that knocked them out before.”

Key players and tactical storylines

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon set a remarkable World Cup record of 650 consecutive minutes without conceding before Belgium finally scored in the 41st minute of their quarterfinal. Substitute Mikel Merino has been Spain’s late-game hero, scoring in the 88th minute against Belgium after also netting in stoppage time against Portugal in the round of 16.

France defender Jules Kounde, who faces Yamal regularly at Barcelona, downplayed any sense of disrespect from the teenager’s earlier comments, saying the young star always trusts in his own abilities and those of his teammates.

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot summed up his team’s mindset, saying they are confident given their run so far but remain humble, a quality that has characterized them throughout the competition.

What’s at stake

The winner will face either defending champions Argentina or England in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium, with a third-place playoff scheduled for Saturday in Miami Gardens. Argentina defeated France in a penalty shootout in the 2022 final after a thrilling 3-3 draw and will meet England in the other semifinal on Wednesday in Atlanta.

Tuesday’s clash at AT&T Stadium, home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, has already hosted a tournament-high nine matches, including unforgettable moments from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. But this semifinal promises to write another chapter in World Cup history, as two unbeaten giants collide with destiny on the line.
