A chance to rebuild
Pakistan’s participation in this tournament comes at a critical juncture. The invitation arrived just one week after the Green Shirts concluded their AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign with a 2-1 victory against Myanmar, a match played behind closed doors at Jinnah Sports Stadium in Islamabad.
That result, while positive, did little to erase the disappointment of an otherwise forgettable campaign. Pakistan had already been eliminated from Asian Cup contention, sitting at the bottom of Group E with only two points from five matches.
The team suffered defeats against Saudi Arabia and Syria in both legs of those fixtures and managed only two stalemates against Afghanistan.
In their previous meeting with Myanmar during the qualifiers, Pakistan had suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat, making the recent victory a small but meaningful step forward.
The Maldives tournament now offers head coach and his squad a valuable platform to test strategies, build squad depth, and regain confidence against comparably ranked South Asian opponents, all essential preparation for future regional competitions.
